Abstract As scholarly communication changes, key areas concerning digitization, standards, and cooperation between university libraries and university presses are cornerstones to a better understanding of the future distribution of information. Content issues play a key role in this discussion due to the growth of information avenues, the expansion of subject areas, and the way information can be distributed. In this new digital environment, however, social issues ranging from the feel of books to the outcome of coding options will play a major role in the acceptance of some types of content containers. ABSTRACT In this presentation, T. Scott Plutchak places modern librarianship in a historical context to show that today's librarians are experiencing a revolution in scholarly communication that is analogous to the advent of Gutenberg's printing press. Scholarly communication is going through a transitional period, and it is too early to tell what a true digital culture will look like. Although librarians like to “get things right,” they are now faced with situations for which there are no established models. Plutchak's presentation discussed the tremendous opportunities for librarians to experiment with ways to use their unique skills in information organization to make important contributions in the digital age. 相似文献

Open access (OA) publishing is now accepted as an integral part of the emerging trends within scholarly communication. Business librarians, like their subject specialist colleagues in other disciplines, are increasingly called upon to interpret scholarly communication trends to their faculty. This study surveys 1,293 business faculty from American schools of business accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Issues explored include business faculty publishing practices within the discipline and how these affect academic advancement, obtaining articles for their own research, electronic publishing, self-archiving, and their perceptions about OA publishing generally. 相似文献

The Public Knowledge Project is an ongoing collaboration between academics, librarians, publishers, editors, and software developers, working together to build alternatives in scholarly publishing. The project has developed a suite of open source software that significantly reduces the time and expense required for producing academic journals and conferences, and facilitates making research results freely available through open access. This paper summarizes the presentations made at the “Academic Journal Publishing” session of the 2007 NASIG conference. The session was conducted by four publishers from a variety of academic publishing companies who made presentations (specifically tailored to a librarian audience) which provided a broad stroke overview of their industry and how they go about the process of publishing and distributing academic journals in the 21st century. Through each of their presentations they spoke to the questions of “what they do, how they do it, and why they do it.” Topics covered included the launch and acquisition of journals, the peer review process, the tools and services supplied to authors and editors, the production processes employed, special legal and copyright issues, marketing and distribution strategies, and usage. 相似文献
